Get up close to the lives of our most feared and revered ancestors on Saturday and Sunday, July 1st and 2nd for a fun, family friendly weekend packed full of free events to celebrate our Viking heritage.

This event is being run in conjunction with the museum’s temporary exhibition, The Hoard and the Sword, which features one of Ireland’s most important Viking silver finds, discovered at Cushalogurt, Co. Mayo, in 1939.

Enjoy demonstrations, displays, talks, tours, and lots of Viking fun over two days.

Living history

On Saturday, July 1, from 11am to 4.30pm, join Dave Swift of living history group Claíomh, for demonstrations on how the Vikings lived, traded and battled.

Exhibition tours

Curator of The Hoard and the Sword exhibition Clodagh Doyle will also be on hand throughout the day for family friendly tours of the fascinating collection of Viking silver and a real life Viking warrior sword on display now at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life.

At 2.30pm on Saturday, hear from archaeologist John Sheehan on why the famous Cushalogurt Hoard is one of Ireland's most important Viking Age finds. Booking is required for this talk for adults as numbers are limited. Find out more here.
