21st century room featuring Snowflake, 2012, translucent cast acrylic, by Leo Scarff
Inspired by watching his children dress the Christmas tree, furniture and lighting designer Leo Scarff wanted to create a contemporary yet simple Christmas ornament.
The snowflake is made from a translucent acrylic which is laser cut. This process leaves a finely polished edge. Scarff used several computer-aided cutting and finishing techniques in an intuitive manner.
Technology is the basis of his design approach. “We feel that furniture production technology has advanced to an extent that it is now possible to create one unit or one thousand with the same ease.” This ethos and understanding of technology enabled Scarff to visualise his idea quickly, make minor changes without disruption and add customised character and individuality to the products.
