The Ardagh Chalice, Reerasta, Co. Limerick. 8th century AD
HCL 010 Replica by Edmund Johnson, Dublin (?)
On loan from the Hunt Museum.
The Ardagh chalice probably represents the highest achievement in Irish metalworking skills. It was found in 1868, along with another plain copper alloy chalice and four silver brooches.
The most famous replica of the Ardagh Chalice is the Sam Maguire Cup. It was designed by Hopkins & Hopkins of Dublin and was first presented at the 1928 final of the All-Ireland Gaelic football championship. This was replaced in 1988. The Liam McCarthy cup presented to the All-Ireland hurling champions was made by Edmund Johnson and is based on an Irish medieval drinking cup.
