The originals are preserved in the Musée des Antiquités Nationales at St Germain, near Paris. They would have formed the finials or gable decorations of a tomb-shaped reliquary. Written accounts, such as that given in the Life of Brigid, describe highly ornate reliquaries which contained the remains of important religious figures.
