Families & Children
Have an animal adventure at the National Museum of Ireland - Natural History.
From animals that live (or used to live!) in Ireland
, to mammals of the world
, big and small, children will be amazed as soon as they walk in the entrance of this unique Museum. And we're pretty sure that parents will enjoy it too!
You can wander around museum at your own pace, or sign up for tours and events that are tailored specifically for families.
Family Events & Tours
The My Museum programme of events is designed to encourage families to work together, in an alternative and fun way, to learn more about the National Museum of Ireland’s collections.
Every four weeks, the Museum’s collections are explored either through an art, drama or storytelling workshop, or through a workshop showing real animal specimens up close.
From time to time special family and children’s events will take place looking at a particular aspect of the animal world. These are listed in the Calendar of Events
, where you will find details of age suitability and booking.
To find out more about the times and costs of tours and workshops, check out the Calendar of Events.
*Please note that places are limited and operate on a first come, first served basis.
The Discovery Zone
, situated on the ground floor of the Museum, is an area where children can handle a badger and a pilot whale skull (pictured right), as well as learn about life on land and in water.
If you or your little ones want some chill out time or want to find out more about the animals on display, pop up to the Reading Room and grab a book. You are welcome to stay for as long or as short a time as you like.
Explore the Museum - Downloadable Family Activity Booklets
Click to download and print the family activity booklets before your visit. These activity booklets are also available on the ground floor, near the main entrance.
All our activity sheets and our poster are printed on paper from sustainable sources.
- Baby changing facilities are available in the downstairs toilet facility, next to the Museum entrance.
- It is possible to take pushchairs/strollers around the ground floor of the Museum (Irish Fauna exhibition), however please note there are no lifts to the first floor (Mammals of the World exhibition).
- Pushchairs/strollers can be left at the Museum entrance at the Museum's discretion, but this is not always possible as there is limited space. Owners are responsible for pushchairs left unattended. Please contact Reception desk when you arrive for more information.

"It's lovely, there's so much to see and the children just run around and pick what they fancy.. they don't get to see these things, so its nice for them to walk around and see everything..."
