Although the weather may have been damp, spirits were certainly high as thousands of visitors descended on the grounds of the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life in Castlebar to celebrate the annual, free, family weekend festival Féile na Tuaithe.

The West of Ireland Beekeepers Federation was new to the festival this year and proved a big hit with visitors. They brought along demonstration hives and spoke to visitors about the potential of the honeybee. Other highlights included Rob Steinke from the Museum of the Master Saddler and his two mini Shetland ponies Rocky and Rambo, the Fanzini Brothers with their mad-cap entertainment and Lothar Mushketat from Eagles Flying.

This year, and to celebrate the Year of Craft, the programme had a wonderful range of artisan craft producers from all over Ireland. The dedicated tented area where visitors could sample and buy quality food and crafts from Irish producer remained one of the most popular areas in the grounds.

Féile na Tuaithe 2011 was even more dynamic than previous years as the organisers focused on a theme of “sustainability”. There was an informative and engaging showcase for sustainable opportunities including St. Coleman’s Training Centre who provided horticultural training, the West of Ireland’s Beekeepers Federation displayed the numerous benefits of Irish honey and the New Ground art project created a collection of sculptures and installations to form an Arts Trail in the grounds of the Museum in Turlough Park.

On Sunday, Tony Candon, Manager/Keeper at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, announced the winners of the very successful Féile photography competition which received over 160 entries of outstanding quality photos. You can see the winning entries here.

Tony Candon, Manager/Keeper at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, said: “We are delighted with Féile this year and feel it was a great success. The weather was not always on our side but the people of Mayo and beyond didn’t let that dampen their spirits. We would to thank everyone for coming to Turlough Park and celebrating with us. A big thank you too to all those who took part this year.”
