Conference: Soldiers and Civilians - Experiences and Memories of the First World War

 - CALL FOR PAPERS -

This is the seventh conference hosted by the National Museum of Ireland on World War One since 2008.

The purpose of this conference is to explore personal and collective experiences of the First World War as well as memories and ways of commemorating the War, both in Ireland and internationally.

Papers may deal with any of the aspects of this subject and we welcome proposals from all disciplines; whether you are a historian, artist, postgraduate student, heritage professional, independent researcher, collector or descendant of someone who fought in the War.

Experiencing the War

  • What did men and women in uniform, and prisoners or civilians experience during the War?
  • What did they feel, see and use?
  • Whom and what did they encounter?
  • What were new experiences and realities during this first 'total' war?

This includes physical and psychological experiences at the war and home front, for example, experiences of space, shortages, destruction, death, injury, trauma, loss and mourning but also faith, ideology and motivations.

Memory and Commemoration

  • Collective and individual memories of the War: in Ireland, north and south of the border, and outside Ireland.
  • Representations and commemoration in the public sphere, for example in museums and galleries, both during and after the conflict.
  • Memory and material culture of World War One.

Individual papers will last for 20 minutes and anyone interested in presenting their work should submit a short Curriculum Vitae or biographical note along with an abstract of no more than 300 words to the below addresses before .

The conference will be held at the National Museum of Ireland - Decorative Arts & History, Collins Barracks.
