Exploring Museums / Object Handling Workshop
The following workshop promotes student-centred and student-led ways of learning about Irish social history. Other skills developed include listening and speaking, debating and group skills.
Workshops can cater for groups of up to 30, but large classes will be split into two smaller groups.
Please note that workshop availability is extremely limited from September to December 2014.
If Things Could Talk - Exploring Museums Workshop
This workshop aims to explore the purpose of Museums, the role of the curator and the meanings that we invest in objects. The workshop takes place in the galleries using handling objects and is facilitated by Museum educators.
Students work in small groups and are encouraged to explore objects through observation and discussion. They are encouraged to gather information about the objects as a curator would, for example, by looking at physical features, design, condition and raw materials. Students are asked to think about functionality and who might have owned a particular object.
The workshop also aims to provide students with opportunities to develop their observational, analytical, listening and team working skills. The structure of this workshop allows it to be tailored to a wide range of learning abilities and learning styles.

Follow-up projects or activities can really help to reinforce learning that happened at the Museum and makes the most of your visit. You could:
- Make your own school or classroom Museum, if everyone was a curator, what would they put in the exhibition? Plan your exhibition by selecting the theme and the objects. Then think about labels or information panels, and the exhibition title. Invite other students, teachers or parents and families to your Museum.
- Make your own box of objects choosing items from modern daily life - what object would you choose to tell your story?
