R Ó Floinn Appointment - Director

The Board of the National Museum of Ireland has announced the appointment of Mr. Raghnall Ó Floinn as Director of the National Museum of Ireland. The appointment follows an international search for a Director to succeed Dr. Patrick Wallace who retired from the post at the end of February 2012.

Mr. Ó Floinn has gained a vast wealth of experience in all key aspects of the work and management of the National Museum over several years including as Head of Collections over the past ten years.

Mr. Ó Floinn holds an M.A. in Archaeology from U.C.D. He is an internationally acknowledged expert in the material culture of medieval Ireland with a proven publication record. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquarians of London, a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, and is a Vice-Chairman and Trustee of the Society of Medieval Archaeology, London.

Mr. Ó Floinn’s appointment as Director comes at a transformational time for the National Museum. Dr. John O’Mahony S.C., Chairman of the Board of The National Museum, welcomed the appointment of Mr. Ó Floinn as Director. Dr. O’Mahony stated “Mr. Ó Floinn is coming to the post of Director at a time when the National Museum is facing very significant challenges because of the moratorium on recruitment, the reduction in staff numbers, and the uncertain governance environment. The Board of the National Museum is keenly aware of the vigour, energy, and vision that is necessary to lead the National Museum in these very difficult times. The Board is confident that Mr. Ó Floinn will bring the vitality and determination that is essential to lead the National Museum in the very difficult times ahead for Ireland’s largest cultural institution.”

Mr. Ó Floinn commented “I am privileged and honoured to be appointed as Director by the Board of the National Museum of Ireland. The Museum’s collections are without parallel and I look forward to working with our exceptionally talented and enthusiastic staff, the Board and our stakeholders to build an outward-looking, creative and welcoming institution capable of meeting current needs and challenges.”

The Board also expressed its thanks to Mr Seamus Lynam, who was Acting Director pending the formal appointment of a Director.

Mr Ó Floinn will take up the position of Director, National Museum of Ireland, on Monday, 8th July.
