Tribute paid to Dr. Patrick Wallace, Director of National Museum of Ireland

Dr. John O’Mahony, S.C., Chairman, on behalf of the Board of the National Museum of Ireland has paid a very high tribute to Dr. Patrick Wallace, Director of the National Museum of Ireland who retires today, Wednesday, February, 29th.

Dr. O’Mahony said that Dr. Wallace has been an outstanding Director of the National Museum of Ireland whose scholarship and distinction as leader of the National Museum and as an archaeologist are recognised and admired both nationally and internationally. In particular he lead the National Museum of Ireland team on the Wood Quay project between 1974 and 1981 before becoming Director of the National Museum, a position which he has held for the past 24 years.

Dr. O’Mahony wished Dr. Wallace every success on his retirement but hoped that Dr. Wallace would be available to complete the important write-up of the Wood Quay project, which is a matter of profound national and archaeological significance.

The Board of the National Museum of Ireland has nominated Mr. Seamus Lynam as acting Director pending the appointment of a successor to Dr. Wallace. The process in respect of which will be completed over the coming months.
