The Heritage Education Trust independently assesses museums and heritage sites across Britain and Ireland and has recognised the National Museum of Ireland-Country Life for the high quality of its learning programmes. The award will be presented to the Museum at a ceremony in London in December.

From gallows, shillelaghs and manacles to the hangman’s rope! This exhibition commemorates two hundred years of law and order through objects relating to policing, crime, prisons and punishment, highlighting the sometimes uncomfortable reality of Ireland’s official past.

Explore how ancient people marked the mid-winter solstice, the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere with a tour of the Prehistoric Ireland exhibition. View grave goods from the Neolithic passage tombs at Newgrange and Knowth Co. Meath and discover the skills used to create some of our most famous monuments and artefacts. No booking required, places limited to 20, allocated on a first come basis. Wheelchair accessible.

Discover our handling collection of replica artefacts, the long journeys the Vikings took and what materials they imported and exported to Ireland, and make your own Viking coins and merchants pouch to take home.
