Collins Barracks to host a programme of events to commemorate the Battle of the Somme
The National Museum of Ireland Decorative Arts and History will run a series of events to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. These events will include film screenings, talks and lectures from July to September. Topics will vary from events at the Somme to the local impact with talks on Ulster communities and 10th Royal Dublin Fusiliers who had been trained at the Royal Barracks Dublin (site of Collins Barracks and the Museum today).

There will be screenings of The Battle of the Somme film through the Imperial War Museums First World War Centenary Partnership. Through the partnership the Imperial War Museums (IWM) and National Museum of Ireland-Decorative Arts and History are working together to show the UNESCO listed film The Battle of the Somme, to audiences across the world. Shot and screened in 1916, it was the first feature length documentary about war and changed the way both cinema and film was perceived by the public. In the year of its release around 20 million people, almost half the population of Britain at the time, watched The Battle of the Somme - many hoping to see the image of a loved-one, or friend captured on film. One hundred years later, this unique film from IWM’s collection, is being shown to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. Each screening in the AV theatre Collins Barracks will be accompanied by a short introduction from a historian on the Battle of the Somme.
