Soldiers and Civilians - Experiences and Memories of the First World War

At the National Museum of Ireland, Decorative Arts and History, Collins Barracks, Dublin 7
Saturday 25 October 2014, 10am-5.15pm

What was the First World War really like for men and women in uniform, and prisoners and civilians experience during the War?

Through letters, poetry, diaries, cartoons and first-hand accounts of the realities of war, we explore the everyday and extraordinary experiences of soldiers, nurses and civilians during the First World War.

With a range of speakers from Ireland and abroad, we’ll focus on the experiences of the First World War, not just from an Irish viewpoint, but from the Turkish, British and German perspectives, and look at how the War has been commemorated across Europe in the centenary year of the start of the conflict.

Speakers include Dr Catriona Pennell (University of Exeter), Altay Cengizer (Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Dr William Mulligan (University College Dublin) and Dr Elaine Byrne (Global Irish Studies Centre, University of New South Wales, Sydney).

The Royal Dublin Fusiliers Association will give a drop-in workshop on how to trace records of family relatives who served in the army during WW1.

Tickets €10/ Concessions €7. Booking required: bookings@museum.ie

Notes to the editor

• This is the seventh annual day of talks and events exploring World War One the Museum has held since 2008. Around 200,000 Irishmen served in the British Services and more than 30,000 Irishmen died in the War.
• Visitors interested in this period of history can explore more in the award-winning exhibition, ‘Soldiers and Chiefs’ which traces Ireland's military history from 1550 into the 21st Century, on display at Collins Barracks.
• The National Museum of Ireland will organise similar events in the coming year and will again place calls for papers for events, as it did for this conference. For more information on upcoming events check the Museum website www.museum.ie
