Ms Lynn Scarff appointed as new Director of the National Museum of Ireland

The Board of the National Museum of Ireland has announced the appointment of Ms Lynn Scarff as Director of the National Museum of Ireland.

The Board of the National Museum of Ireland has announced the appointment of Ms Lynn Scarff as Director of the National Museum of Ireland. The appointment follows a candidate search for a Director to succeed Mr Raghnall Ó Floinn who will retire from the post in 2018.

Lynn Scarff has been working professionally in the cultural and education realms for over seventeen years with extensive experience in leading and working with a number of cultural and educational institutions in Ireland. Part of the founding team of Science Gallery, Trinity College Dublin, Lynn is an expert in non-formal learning with experience in the fields of art, science and public engagement programmes. She has significant expertise in programme development, strategy, brand development, marketing and communications, financial planning and team building. She has lead Science Gallery, Trinity College Dublin as Director since 2014 and prior to that served as Head of Programming.

Lynn serves on the board of the Rediscovery Centre in Ballymun, a new social enterprise and educational space, which she was connected to when working with Ballymun Regeneration through the early 2000s. She was a board member of the National Museum of Ireland from May 2016 to the end of 2017. She is passionate about culture, science and arts; and the potential of spaces like our museums to be facilitators of transformation in young people’s lives, particularly among under served and non-dominant learner communities.

Ms Catherine Heaney, Chair of the Board of the National Museum of Ireland, welcomed the appointment of Ms Scarff as Director. Ms Heaney stated:

“The Board of the National Museum of Ireland is very pleased that Lynn Scarff emerged as the successful candidate in our recent competition for a new director.  The Museum will shortly enter a development phase that will entail changes in our strategy and approach, as well as physical changes to our buildings and how we manage and enable access to our collections.  Lynn’s energy, vision and experience in the wider cultural space will be a huge asset as we embark on this phase.

“Having served on the Board of the National Museum of Ireland, Lynn is aware of the challenges that have faced the institution; however, she is also acutely aware of the talent across our teams, and of the potential within our collections.

“Lynn will take up her appointment in May 2018, and has resigned as a member of the Board.  During the competition process for the position, Lynn took a leave of absence from the Board.”

Ms Scarff commented: “The National Museum of Ireland is an incredibly important element of our cultural life in Ireland and the variety and breadth of the collection and activities across the four sites is a testament to the passion, expertise and commitment of the NMI team. I am deeply honoured to be given the opportunity to lead this organisation into the next phase of its development. I look forward to working with the NMI Board, our partners in the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and most crucially the NMI team, as well as our peers in the museum and cultural sector in Ireland. It is an exciting time globally for our museums, libraries and galleries, as we demonstrate the importance of these spaces of human connection and understanding in an increasingly isolated world – I am excited to work with the NMI Board and team to build its expertise and legacy further over the coming years.”

Mr Raghnall Ó Floinn, Director, said “I am delighted with Lynn’s appointment and look forward to working with her in the coming months.”

The Board expressed its sincere thanks to Mr Raghnall Ó Floinn for his hard work and dedication during his time as Director.
