Fishy Fun at the National Museum of Ireland – Natural History for International Year of the Salmon

Canney welcomes summer programme of events

The salmon is an iconic animal in Ireland. It is one of just five species of freshwater fish that occur here naturally and it is the largest fish species in our rivers. Salmon have been part of the diet of Irish people for thousands of years and they hold a special place in folklore and legend, with stories like Fionn mac Cumhaill and the Salmon of Knowledge.

However, salmon are now at risk due to changes in the environment and impact from humans. To help raise awareness of this the National Museum of Ireland is working with Inland Fisheries Ireland to celebrate the International year of the Salmon. We will use our Natural History collections and activities by our Education Department to celebrate salmon and highlight their importance as a key species for Ireland.

Sean Canney TD, Minister with responsibility for the inland fisheries sector, launched this initiative which is one of a number of activities taking place throughout the summer to promote salmon conservation and the fisheries resource.
