The museum is delighted to take part once again in Bealtaine – the annual celebration each May of the arts and creativity as we age. Here are six great events to enjoy from the museum’s free Bealtaine programme. May traditions

As in much of northern Europe, May Day was an important festival for our rural ancestors in Ireland, signalling the arrival of summer. There is a host of fascinating customs and traditions associated with the month of May from fires, flowers and dancing to May bushes and butter stealing. Learn more about May customs and a year in the life of our rural ancestors, in the Life in the Community exhibition on Level C.

Mayo: Experiences of Emigration

Come along to a special day of panel talks and discussion on Mayo: Experiences of Emigration from 11am to 4pm on Saturday, May 12. Hear personal accounts of emigration and the plights, challenges and triumphs experienced. Admission free. Booking required.

National Treasures

Arising out of the popular RTÉ television programme with John Creedon, discover a new exhibition of ordinary little objects with big stories to tell. All objects were submitted by members of the public as part of a unique all-island project to tell Ireland’s social history over the last 100 years.

Frederic William Burton talk

Join Dr Marie Bourke for an illustrated talk on the life and career of the famous Irish artist Frederic William Burton. The talk takes place from 2.30pm to 3.30pm on Sunday, May 20. Dr Bourke will shed light on this leading water-colourist of the Pre-Raphaelite era, and his affection for the people and landscape of the west of Ireland. Admission free. Booking required.

Choral performance

Hear the wonderful University of Southern Indiana Chamber Choir perform in the galleries of the museum at 2.30pm on Thursday, May 24. This free performance is staged in association with the Mayo International Choral Festival. No booking required.

Crafting: Textile flowers

Join the Connacht Textile Crafters on Saturday, May 26, between 11.30am and 3pm for an open crafting session all about textile flowers. Drop-in to this activity to explore various skills, including felting, crochet, knitting and embroidery. No booking required.

Museum opening hours

Admission to the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, Turlough Park House & Gardens is free. The exhibition galleries are open Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am to 5pm, and on Sundays from 2 to 5pm. Closed Mondays (including Bank Holidays).
