Travellers' Journey

An exploration of Irish Traveller Culture


Travellers’ Journey is a temporary exhibition exploring the rich culture, traditions and crafts of the Traveller community in the west of Ireland. The exhibition aims to showcase and encourage discussion and appreciation of the unique heritage and ethnicity of the Community.  This exhibition has been curated in partnership with the Western Regional Traveller Health Network.  The exhibition was launched by President Michael D. Higgins on July 10th and continues until May 2019.

 Tinsmith is a film commissioned by the Heritage Office and the Social Inclusion Office of Galway County Council, and funded by Creative Ireland Programme, 2017-2022.  The film is made by Merchants Gate Film, with Director Paul Murphy and Cameraperson Ivan Marcos. It  features the tinsmith work of Edward Ward, and includes footage of Travellers’ Journey exhibition launch at the Museum on 10th July 2018.

I am Traveller: Our histories and heritage is a discussion event that will take place on Saturday afternoon February 22nd 2019.  The panel guests are Brigid Carmody, Hugh Friel, Michael McDonagh, Mary Collins, and Oein DeBhairduin, representing Traveller groups from : Cork, Donegal, Meath, Mayo and Clondalkin.  The panel will share their insights on traditional and contemporary Traveller culture and interesting community initiatives in each of the four provinces. The event will be chaired by Senator Colette Kelleher. All welcome; booking required.
