Fighting Words Mayo

At the National Museum of Ireland

'Fighting Words is an interactive, stimulating, co-operative, fun way of writing that captured the children's imagination. At the end of the process the children were so excited to see the fruit of their work with a beautifully illustrated professional book they had written! The sense of  'we are now published authors' was exhilarating!

About Fighting Words Mayo

Fighting Words Mayo works with students of all ages to develop their creative writing skills, explore their love of writing and let their imaginations run free. Our friendly and relaxed storytelling workshops support the aims of the DES Literacy and Numeracy Strategy and are DCU approved.

In 2017/18 Fighting Words Mayo will run two FREE workshops each month for Primary schools. These workshops will take place at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life where your class can avail of additional activities and resources.

Fighting words Mayo was founded by Noreen Walsh, Laura Campbell and Teresa Keane in 2015, with the belief that there are no limits to imagination and creativity.

Fighting Words Mayo is the first branch established outside of Dublin since Roddy Doyle and Sean Love  founded the Fighting Words Creative Writing Centre in 2009.

How it Works!

With the help of volunteer tutors, children write an original story and decide on the characters and plot. A volunteer artist is also on hand to provide illustrations.

The story and illustrations are bound and each child receives a copy of the book to take home. Each book is personalised with a photo of the student on the back cover.
