Symbolising the Nation: The Architectural Competitions to Design the National Museum & National Library

Lecture: Friday 13th October, 1pm-1:45pm

A lecture by architectural historian Dr Niamh Marnham about the battles over the choice of site, the use of indigenous architects, materials and labour in the creation of the buildings that today house the National Museum and the National Library. Niamh’s talk will examine the clashes in Parliament, newspapers and trade journals over the collections that were to be housed, the choice of site, funding, the use of indigenous architects, materials and labour that were about both symbolising the nation and keeping architects employed. Dr Niamh Marnham is an architectural historian and Senior Historic Buildings Adviser at Donald Insall Associates, London, and has worked on some of the most sensitive and significant buildings and places in Ireland and Britain. These include Leinster House, Marino Casino, Russborough House, St. Pancras Chambers, the Old Vic Theatre and Downing College, Cambridge.
