This special Living Heritage Week event will examine Irish midwifery practice from the late 1800s to the modern day.

Dr Ciara Breathnach, Associate Professor in History at the University of Limerick, will outline the historical context, tracing changes in tradition and practice throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, while Emma Laffey, Skehana & District Heritage Group and author of the award-winning An Bhean Ghlúine publication, will highlight the lives and work of rural midwives. Aisling Dixon, Advanced Midwife Practitioner at Portiuncula Hospital, will talk about midwifery practice today before members of the public will be invited to share their stories, photos and memorabilia of midwives in their family tree.

This event is organised by iCAN (the Irish Community Archive Network)
