Harvest knots

Come and meet the team from the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life at the National Ploughing Championships from 20 to 22 September.

The museum will be based in the Culture, Creativity and Innovation section in the Government of Ireland Village - Block 3 / Row 19/ No 308.

Members of the Museum's Education Team will be giving harvest knots workshops at 10am, 12noon, 2pm and 4pm in the demonstration area on Tuesday and Wednesday, 20 and 21 September, and at 10am, 12noon and 2pm on Thursday, 22 September.

Harvest knots are woven braids of straw, worn by men and women as part of the harvest celebration to mark the completion of the harvest. Visitors will be able to see how to make different types of harvest knot and have a go at making their own as well.

Noel Campbell, Assistant Keeper of the Irish Folklife Collection, will also be available to discuss traditional farming practices and the development of a new gallery at the NMI - Country Life to display the Museum's collection of traditional boats. Find out more in Noel's blog Traditional Boats of Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way.

The National Ploughing Championships are taking place this year in Ratheniska, Co. Laois, next Tuesday to Thursday, 20 to 22 September.
