The Collections Resource Centre is a facility leased by the Office of Public Works in which the National Museum of Ireland and the National Monuments Service are co-located. The Registrar is responsible for the strategic and day-to-day management and operation of the CRC and all collections housed there. It is the home of much of the Museum’s reserve collections. The facility is open to researchers by appointment.
Documentation and Collections Management
The Registration Department is responsible for the maintenance and development of the Collections Management System. The database is the central location for all collections and collections management information. It functions as a research tool, and assists in the management of collections information and the security and audit of collections. Documentation staff work with both the physical collection and the databases to centralise this data to SPECTRUM collections management system standards. This is the on-going daily work of the Documentation team, but is also progressed through various projects, such as the Inventory Project and Documentation Plan.
Loans Administration and Logistics
The administration of loans of object into and out of the Museum is centralised through the Registration Department, where a member of the Documentation Team co-ordinates the loan and manages the process and all related logistics. The Museum borrows and lends objects primarily for the purposes of exhibition and research and is the office of record for official loans files.
Collections Logistics
The Registrar is responsible for the movement of all Museum collections and manages this with the Documentation, Library, Archives and Records Teams. This work includes the maintenance of location control, transport, packing and storage of all museum collections and is regularly carried out with support from Curators, Conservators and external specialists.
Standards and Terminology
The Registrar co-ordinates and manages the collections related standards and terminology lists relating to the cataloguing of Museum collections. These standards are based on relevant international cataloguing standards including SPECTRUM; ISAD (G); IGAD; MAARC and on storage standards such as EN16893.
