Find out about the National Museum of Ireland's collections of Natural History Insects

The Museum collection includes over one million pinned specimens and numerous microscopic preparations. There are over 500 publications on these collections, summarised in the bibliographies detailed below.

There are an estimated 12,000 species of insect in Ireland, possibly many more. Species new to Ireland are recorded every year, some are new arrivals, others may have been overlooked before. The Museum entomologist Dr James O’Connor has produced a popular guide to the common insects that make up the majority of enquiries to the Museum.
