Arming the Volunteers – Firearms in the Fields

.22 Winchester rifle, Aungier Street, Dublin

.22 Winchester rifle, Aungier Street, Dublin

Small calibre rifles, such as this 1902 model .22 Winchester rifle, were designed for hunting and sport rather than military action. However, a lack of suitable rifles meant all firearms became very valuable as weapons.
This rifle was found after the War of Independence hidden in Whitefriar Street Church on Aungier Street, Dublin.
