Eucharistic Congress Banner

Eucharistic Congress banner, blue with yellow paint. Vertical hanging. From the Rialto area, Dublin, 1932.

The 31st Annual Eucharistic Congress was held in Dublin in June 1932. The event was a remarkable spectacle projecting the Irish State’s fusion of Catholic and Irish values, with one million people in attendance. Mass-produced or homemade decorations and souvenirs reflected the festive atmosphere.
The event is significant because it emphasised the depths of Catholicism in the newly established state. It was also an opportunity to make a statement about what the Irish Free State represented.
