Raids and Reprisals - British Reprisals

The Sack of Balbriggan, 21 September 1920

The Sack of Balbriggan, 21 September 1920

The Sack of Balbriggan, 21 September 1920. The town was destroyed when a group of Black and Tans from Gormanstown Military Barracks carried out a reprisal burning for the IRA killing of two policemen. Shows the
ruins of a factory at Balbriggan. Destroying factories not only terrorised the population, but also crippled the local economy.
Photograph by W.D. Hogan of 56 Henry Street, Dublin.
