Clogherhead, Co. Louth, 1944: Architectural Drawings and Watercolours of Traditional Houses

County Louth, Clogherhead - Plan, front elevation and section of a house

Measured and drawn by Barbara Tobias, NUI, Margaret Burke, B.St. Tech, Louis Peppard B.Arch, ARIBA, NUI, 1944. Wove paper, black drawing ink, pencil, watercolour. Height 505mm, Width 722mm.

The front elevation shows this house is made of rubble stone which contrasts with the cut-stone arched gateway shown beside the house. Traditional houses were usually whitewashed – that is rendered with lime - providing a protective, insulating but breathable layer. The plan shows the unusual internal layout of this urban house. Features of note include three fireplaces and partitioning of the living room to provide separate bedrooms.  The section shows the raised grate fireplace with substantial canopy chimney.
