Talk: Animal Care in Ireland

Admission Free | Booking Required

An anaesthetic mask was put on an animal for the administration of chloroform prior to surgery. Air was pumped over chloroform and into the mask trough the metal opening.

Join Dr. Michael Doherty to explore the fascinating folklore of animal care in Ireland. Drawing on his recent research, Dr. Doherty will present ‘The Folklore of Cattle and Sheep through an Ethnoveterinary Lens’. This event is in association with 'Antique Veterinary Objects', an exhibition of selected objects from a donation dealing with animal husbandry and veterinary science now on display.

Emeritus Professor Michael Doherty served as Dean and Head of the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine between 2016 and 2023.  For his sabbatical research year, he returned to his interest in folklore and has recently completed an MLitt research degree on the folklore of sheep health and husbandry. Dr. Doherty is past president of the European College of Bovine Health Management and he has also been recognised as a European Specialist in sheep health.
