17th November, 5pm
Public Talk - Irish Design Week 2023 - A Nation on Display: Landscapes, Luxuries & Legacies
Three speakers will convene to present their research into Irish design history to discuss how design history can support a new folklore of Irish design.
Join Muireann Charleton, ATU lecturer in Visual & Material Culture, and PhD candidate at Kingston University, London; Dee Maher Ring, PhD candidate at TU Dublin; Angela Mehegan, PhD candidate at TU Dublin who will present themes of Irish twentieth-century design, taste, national identity, oral testimonies, landscapes, craft, and exhibitions.
Archival research and oral history’s valuable role in understanding Irish material culture will be explored. Valuing the voice of designers, craftspeople, and consumers in the study of design that affects them, will be discussed as a method of design history.
Each speaker will present for 15 minutes and after all three talks there will be a panel discussion on the key themes:
Talk 1: The Plough & the Donkey: Exhibiting Craft & Design: Speaker: Muireann Charleton
Talk 2: The Good Room: Design, Memory & Display: Speaker: Angela Mehegan
Talk 3: Kilkenny Signwriting: Design, Heritage & the mysterious Mr. O’Bilia: Speaker: Dee Maher Ring
