Meastar gur feithidí iad beagnach 90% de gach foirm bheatha ainmhí. Faightear iad i mbeagnach gach timpeallacht ar domhan, agus is féidir le líon beag speiceas a bheith faoi bhláth i roinnt áiteanna ar domhan nach bhfuil nádúrtha - sna cathracha, tithe agus gairdíní daoine. Tá líon aisteach feithidí ina gcónaí i dtimpeallachtaí uirbeacha - an chuid is mó dóibh tairbheach, crá croí ata i gcuid eile acu agus líon níos lú arís a d’fhéadfadh a bheith contúirteach. Tá feithidí ó gach cearn den domhan le feiceáil i dtimpeallachtaí uirbeacha, agus is féidir le roinnt acu socrú síos taobh le daoine.

Improve your cúpla focal and learn more about natural history collections this Bealtaine!  Watch back videos with newly translated Irish subtitles on the Museum’s YouTube Channel and learn about insects in our cities.

About 11,500 different insect species have been discovered in Ireland. What six-legged insects live in our cities? Join Entomology Curator, Dr Aidan O’Hanlon, for an online talk on the six-legged neighbours living in our cities!

It is estimated that almost 90% of all animal life forms are insects. They are found in almost every environment on earth, and a small number of species have been able to thrive in some of the least-natural areas on the planet – in the cities, homes and gardens of humans. Urban environments are home to a surprising cast of insect species – most are beneficial, others are a nuisance and fewer still are potentially dangerous. Insects from around the world often show up in urban environments, and a small number of these can settle down alongside humans.

This online talk was developed as part of adult programming for Biodiversity Week 2022. It was a pre-recorded talk that lasted 20 minutes with live Q&A of about 10 minutes.
