Find out about visiting options for mobility, visual and hearing impaired visitors to the National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street.
Entrance
There is one entrance - from Kildare Street, next door to the Government Buildings. There are three stone steps and a wheelchair ramp to the main entrance level. This entrance is level with one set of glass double doors leading into the main reception area.
Step Free access to the Words on the Wave exhibition
While we work on making the Museum fully accessible, we’re really glad to have found a temporary solution with our neighbours at the Houses of the Oireachtas—so visitors with mobility needs can still enjoy the Words on the Wave exhibition with ease and dignity.
Lifts and access to galleries
All ground floor galleries are accessible. However, there is no lift servicing the first floor, however a temporary solution has been arranged for the Words on the Wave exhibition.
Accessible toilet facilities
Accessible toilets are located on the ground floor, on the far side on the central rotunda.
Indoor seating/mobile stools
Seats and mobile stools are available upon request from the Information Desk.
Wheelchairs
Wheelchairs are available from the Reception Desk on request. Please call ahead to reserve one on +353 (0)1 6777444.
Outdoor seating
There is seating located outside the main entrance to the Museum.
Guide dogs
Guide and assistance dogs are welcome.
Lighting
Please note that lighting in some exhibitions is low to address conservation concerns around certain artefacts.
Touchable exhibits
There are touchable exhibits within the Museum. Please ask a staff member or attendant to help you locate these in the Museum.
Induction loops
We regret that induction loops are not currently installed in the Museum.
The NMI is working towards universal accessibility for all visitors at the National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street. Some of these improvements will form part of our capital development project for this museum building.
