Currach adventures, Iniskeen, Aran Islands, 1958

I was left hanging in midair

I went to Iniskeen on the Aran Islands in 1958 for a holiday.  We were the only strangers on the island; a little group of children followed us everywhere.

There was no pier so we arrived in the cattle boat.  A carriage came out to pick you up from the side of the boat.  I was pregnant with my first child and I hesitated when the currach came upon a wave.  I was left hanging in midair, luckily I was held by two fishermen.

I went into the local pub one day on my way from the beach; there was dead silence until I left.  Our landlady told me women did not go into the pub, so that night I went to bed with a candle and my husband joined the locals.
I often think about it.
