Border communities against Brexit Placard

Border Communities Against Brexit (BCAB) Sign, January 2019.

BCAB are a group of professionals and concerned community members. They live on either side of the border in Ireland. This placard was used in a protest held at Carrickcarnon, Old Dublin Road, Dundalk / Newry border area on Saturday 26th January 2019. At this time, the UK was due to leave the EU in March 2019.

The placard shows the fear and anxiety of those working and living around the border region. It states, 'those in Westminster simply don’t care about the impact that a hard border or no-deal Brexit will have on our families and communities'. The protests from Derry to Louth were a result of a collective feeling of 'not being listened to when it comes to the implications of Brexit'.

BCAB was established in late 2016 in response to the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union (EU). With Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland both being EU states it meant that freedom of goods, movement and transport could occur seamlessly through an invisible border. Brexit threatened a return of a hard border in Ireland.
