The white-tailed sea eagle was driven to extinction in Ireland by human action in the early twentieth century. Since 2007, over one hundred eagle chicks have been brought from wild nests in Norway and re-introduced in Ireland as part of an Irish government initiative. As one of the largest predatory bird species in Ireland, they play an important role in ecosystem balance. The species are breeding again in Ireland and are a positive example of efforts to correct biodiversity loss.
