No. 9 IRA GHQ pattern grenade, Meath Brigade, 1920-1921

No. 9 IRA GHQ pattern grenade, Meath Brigade, 1920-1921

This cast iron grenade case is of the No.9 GHQ Pattern. This case however, has the following cast into its body - "P. Reilly, 1 Bat. Capt. 3 Meath Brig. I.R.A.".
This likely refers to Patrick O’Reilly who was Captain of the Moynalty Company, and Vice Commandant of the Kells Battalion, of the Meath Brigade. The purpose of the name on the case is not yet known, but may have been made as a commemorative item.
