Internment, Imprisonment and Escape - Ballykinlar

Musicians, Ballykinlar Internment Camp, c. 1920

Musicians, Ballykinlar Internment Camp, c. 1920

A group of musicians in Ballykinlar Internment Camp, c. 1920, in four rows, most of them with violins. Martin Walton is the bearded man standing on right. This photograph belonged to Dan Hannon, who was imprisoned in Kilmainham prior to Ballykinlar (1919 - 1921).

The photographer is not confirmed, but is possibly one of a set taken by an internee, Frank McKay, who smuggled a camera into the camp without the knowledge of the British authorities. This was arranged by Joe McGrath, who also had a typewriter smuggled in at the same time.
