TALKING DESIGN: The Irish Roots of Modern Woodturning

Free

Reproduction of the 1969 KDW Wooden Bowl

Join woodturner and lecturer Ambrose O'Halloran to hear the story of how a simple bowl, designed by Kilkenny Design Workshops in the late 1960s, led to a reimagining of the traditional skill of woodturning and its resurgence in modern crafting in Ireland.

The Wooden Bowl was developed in the Kilkenny Design Workshops (KDW) in 1969, and went on to be produced by the Galbriath family in Abbeyleix in large quantities. It was exported to the UK and the interest and popularity it garnered led to a renewed focus on woodturning in Ireland.

This is a fascinating story of Irish design and the research which led to the reproduction of the 1969 Wooden Bowl.

This is a free event, suitable for adults and children aged 14 years plus. Booking is required. Email BookingsCountryLife@museum.ie or telephone the bookings office on (094) 90 31751.
