Maker unknown

F:1953.2

Provenance: Tuam district, Co. Galway. Maker: Unknown

This armchair is of very similar construction to F:1953.1 and is also made from unpainted ash wood.
It has a T-shaped stretcher joinng the three legs, as do all the of the Museums example of this chair type.

A distinguishing feature of this chair type is that single board that forms the back leg and extends to form the back rest.  As you view this chair from the side, you can see the backrest rakes backwards, providing both comfort and stability. The chairmaker required a thick length of timber to achieve this effect.

This chair was lent to the National Museum of Ireland from the Irish Folklore Commission (Coimisiún Béaloideasa Éireann) in 1953.
