While Dublin was a Pro-Treaty area, much of the country - particularly the Munster region – was controlled by Anti-Treaty forces. However, the Free State soon took control of the region’s large towns, and the fighting moved to the countryside, with the Flying Columns reformed to ambush Free State forces. The pattern of guerrilla style attack and official retaliation returned.
