Learn all about the different designs used by people in the Stone Age to decorate prehistoric tombs in Ireland.

Download and print out our ‘Megalithic Rock Art’ activity sheet to see the shapes and patterns used by people in the Stone Age in Ireland to decorate large stones called megaliths. Learn how you can design and decorate your own stone at home with megalithic art.

When you have completed your Megalithic Rock Art, why not send us a picture of it to educationarch@museum.ie or post a photo online through Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using #MuseumAtHome.

This activity can be used as an at home activity for children and families, or printed off and brought to the National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology as part of your visit. It can accompany your visit to the Prehistoric Ireland Exhibition. Once you have completed the activity sheet, why not try and find all the words in our Stone Age Wordsearch.

This activity is designed for children aged 7-14 years old and is curriculum linked to the SESE History Curriculum. This can be completed at home, as a family activity, or used by Primary school teachers and students.

Museum at Home - Megalithic Rock Art

A special online family workshop about this activity sheet took place on Wednesday 18th August at 3pm as part of Heritage Week 2021 and can be viewed below. This includes a short tour about the Stone Age in Ireland and some of the artefacts on display at the Museum. It also shows how you can use the activity sheet at home, along with instructions on how to paint and decorate stones to create your own megalithic stones at home.
