Made by Thomas Hughes

F:1943.247

Provenance: Cloonkeely, Tuam, Co. Galway. Maker: Thomas Hughes

The Sligo/Tuam style chair can be made as either a side chair with out arms or as an armchair.  In this armchair, the arms radiate from the back rest of chair. They are supported by arm supports which rise from the seat of the chair. In other examples of these chairs in the Museum collection, arm supports are a continuation of the chairs' front legs.

This armchair is made from beech apart from the two front legs and the two stretchers, which are made from ash. Unusally, for this type of chair, the seat and the arms are attached to the backrest with nails.

This chair was acquired by the Museum from Dr Thomas Costello of Tuam, Co. Galway in 1943.
