Tin lantern

The National Museum of Ireland acquired its first two tinsmith made lanterns in 1931 from Co. Down.

These were described by the donor as ‘farm lanterns’. They provided light for those checking animals in the evening time.

In the same year these lanterns were acquired, the Electricity Board for Northern Ireland was established. The coming of electricity replaced the need for candle light and tin-lanterns.
