February Midterm, Families, Ages 7+

Online Activity: Bird is the Word

Free

Robins (Erithacus rubecula) from the National Museum's collection

It is February midterm and nature is waking up after the winter. Why not practice noticing nature with the birdsong challenge?

When it comes to looking for and finding nature in the world around us, we tend to rely on our eyes but did you know your ears are just as important? Often when looking for birds, you will be able to hear them before you can spot them so learning their songs is a great way to figure out exactly who is hanging out in your garden or the park.

The Birdsong Challenge

Watch the five videos below and learn the different songs of 5 common Irish birds.

Birdsong Video 1: Robin

Birdsong Video 2: Blackbird

Birdsong Video 3: Great Tit

Birdsong Video 4: Chaffinch

Birdsong Video 5: Blue Tit

Get Out into the Garden!

Now you know what to listen out for, why not go out into nature and see what birds you can identify. Remeber that nature is all around you and even if you don't have a garden, you can still spot birds in he park or in your local neighbourhood.
